LEIPPERT, JÜRGEN (1944) "Apache" 1987/1988. Oil on canvas. Approx. 100 x 100 cm. Frame, H x W: 107 x 107 cm. Signed in blue in the upper right corner of the canvas: “Leippert.” Signed and dated in black paint on the reverse: “Leippert 88.” Also labeled on the stretcher with a typographic sticker, dated and bearing the price at the time: "'Apache' 1987 / Oil on canvas / DM 7,000." With expressive brushwork and dynamic color contrasts, Jürgen Leippert captures an enigmatic, narrative scene in the work "Apache." The motif—a juxtaposition of two highly stylized figures against a nocturnal, presumably urban background—thrives on the stark contrast between cool shades of blue and green and selectively placed, bright red accents. On the left side, the dominant feature is the distinctive, mask-like profile of a man with strikingly defined lips, while in the foreground, a blonde woman in an evening gown stares directly at the viewer. The title “Apache” presumably refers to the passionate Parisian dance and social scene of the same name from the turn of the century, which underscores the composition’s underlying drama and shimmering eroticism. The work is an outstanding example of Leippert’s figurative creative phase of the late 1980s, during which he translated the atmosphere of big-city life into masterful, almost theatrical paintings. Good, original condition. The layers of paint exhibit high luminosity. Minimal wear along the edges, typical for the age of the work, caused by framing. The silver plated shadow-joint frame is in very good condition with slight signs of wear.
