1604 - LEIPPERT, JÜRGEN (1944) "New York City, The Plaza Hotel" 1984 Oil on canvas. 77 x 101 cm. Signed, dated, and titled on the back of the canvas: "Leippert N.Y. 10/21/84 Plaza." Framed. 82 x 106 cm. Jürgen Leippert, known for his expressive and vibrantly colored cityscapes, captures the pulsating atmosphere of New York in this large-format painting. Depicted is the monumental facade of the legendary Plaza Hotel on Fifth Avenue, adorned with a row of international flags (including those of the U.S., Great Britain, France, Japan, and Norway) fluttering in the wind. In the foreground, the bustling activity of the city unfolds: yellow taxis, passersby, and horse-drawn carriages—all typical of this neighborhood—are rendered with confident, broad brushstrokes and impasto. The composition captivates with its dynamism, which Leippert achieves through the diagonal arrangement of the carriages and the flowing movements of the masses of color. The light and the reflections on the wet street reinforce the impression of liveliness. The work is a typical example of Leippert’s “Nervous Realism,” which makes the hustle and bustle and fascination of the metropolis immediately palpable. A significant work in the artist’s oeuvre, depicting one of New York’s most iconic views. In good original condition. The colors are fresh and vibrant. The simple white shadow-joint frame shows slight signs of wear.
