LOHÉ, YVES (1947) "Seahorse" Sculpture in patinated bronze and colored glass. H: 29 cm. The sculpture depicts a stylized, upright seahorse resting on an irregularly shaped bronze base. It is characterized by Lohé’s signature and masterful combination of two contrasting materials. The animal’s body is made of artfully crafted, multicolored glass (pâte de verre). The colors transition from deep blue and green at the base to warmer shades of yellow and gold, culminating in a translucent head, reminiscent of the refraction of light in seawater. The surface of the glass is irregular and matte, which underscores the organic character of the form. The head, dorsal fin, curled tail, and parts of the skeleton are made of solid bronze, which is polished in some places and darkly patinated in others. These metal elements encase the glass body and provide the sculpture with its structure and stability. The dynamic, wave-like form of the bronze parts lends the work a lively sense of movement. The work is a characteristic example of Lohé’s oeuvre from the period when he was intensely engaged with marine motifs and the fusion of metal and glass. The bronze base bears an embossed “LOHÉ” signature. The lower portion of the glass body also features an engraved “LOHÉ” signature. The bronze exhibits a slight patina consistent with its age. The glass shows no visible cracks or chips.
