DALÍ, SALVADOR (1904–1989) Plate “Ceci n’est pas une assiette,” 1970s. Pâte de verre, solid-colored dark violet, cast in a mold. Diameter: approx. 25.5 cm. Marked in the center (molded into the piece): “CECI N’EST PAS UNE ASSIETTE” and signed “Dalí.” Produced by Daum Frères, Nancy. Item number: 1307 / 2000. Comes with the original Daum certificate (manufacturer’s stamp and handwritten number 1307/2000, as well as a printed signature). Round, flat plate made of translucent glass paste with a relief, surrealist design. In the design and text, Dalí humorously and ironically references the famous René Magritte motif (“Ceci n’est pas une pipe”). The composition features a dynamic, almost fluid-looking central motif, framed by the artist’s characteristic, flowing typography. In very good, undamaged condition. Certificate is slightly yellowed with light handling marks along the edge.
