(Louis JOU). BRUN (Maurice). GROUMANDUGI. Reflections and Memories of a Provençal Gourmet. Preface by Charles Maurras. Marseille, published by the author, 1949. Folio size, ocean-blue calfskin, interior binding in blue morocco with gold fillets and floral fabric, endpapers of heavy paper with floral inclusions, entirely untrimmed, cover and spine, slipcase (Martin-Brès). A superb volume laid out and lavishly illustrated by Louis Jou. It opens with a portrait drawn in bistre, followed by a 17-page preface by Charles Maurras. The first part is a lively celebration of Provençal cuisine: garlic, olive oil, seafood, roasts, and spit-roasted meats, featuring two double-sided color plates of rotisseries… The second part, dedicated to the author’s son, contains, in addition to numerous woodcuts, a stencil-colored map of Berthet’s restaurant, a menu, and a document from the French government authorizing Brun to open a restaurant in Brazil for the glory of French cuisine. THIS COPY IS ENRICHED WITH A LONG, SIGNED DEDICATION by the author, dated 1949, addressed to Henri Montjoye, a native of Savoy and Switzerland, the talented director of the Gaité Lyrique; it is printed on watermarked Auvergne paper. A single edition of 1,026 numbered copies. “A very enjoyable work; the illustrations maintain a remarkable unity” (Feuille No. 99) (Fétis, p. 123). BEAUTIFUL COPY IN FULL BLUE MARTIN-BRES CALFSCAP, (workshop opened in Marseille around 1942).
