BIBLE - [BERNARD (J.)]. THE HOLY GOSPEL of Jesus Christ according to Saint John. Translated from the Vulgate by Le Maistre de Sacy. Lyon, Maurice Gellerat, 1936. In-4° in loose sheets, in a slipcase with silk endpapers featuring gold motifs, in the publisher’s case. A beautifully crafted volume whose 250 illustrations, letters, and initials—all in color—required the artist to carve 2,800 woodblocks. This edition, printed in a run of 130 copies on specially watermarked Montval paper, was commissioned by the Lyon bookseller Gellerat. The volume is complete with the fold-out illustration plan. The slipcase and cover are worn and have pinholes.
