A substantial in-8 volume of [78]-960 pages, olive morocco leather, covers richly decorated with gilt fleurons and foliage, ribbed spine, gilt interior lace, double endpapers, gilt edges (Gruel). FIRST EDITION of the translation accompanied by Lemaistre de Sacy’s literal and spiritual explanations. The preface contains a chapter on the inconsistencies of the Muslim religion and the imposture of Muhammad, directly inspired by Grotius. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY FEATURING 130 18TH-CENTURY ENGRAVINGS, most by Le Maire after drawings by Raphael, Caravaggio, Sadeler, Tempesta, Corneille, and others. Front and spine slightly faded. The binding, executed by Gruel, is of excellent quality.
