Geiger, Willi "Marabu with Laurel Branches". Black ink and pen on Fabriano vellum. 35.8 x 29.2 cm. Signed, dated, and titled below the image: “Willi Geiger Florence Aug 1909 ‘Marabu with Laurel Branches’”. Willi Geiger studied at the Munich Academy from 1902 to 1905 under Franz von Stuck and Peter Halm. As early as 1903, he attracted attention with his series of ink drawings “Seele” and, in 1904–05, with his etching cycle “Liebe.” The young artist received the State Prize and the Schack Scholarship, which enabled him to spend two years working in Spain and Italy. His works created in Rome in 1905–06 caused a scandal upon their publication due to their satirical and sexual content. Upon returning to Munich, he devoted himself to designing bookplates, book decorations, and illustrations. In 1908, his son, the architect, painter, and sculptor Rupprecht Geiger, was born. In 1909–10, Willi Geiger received the Villa Romana Prize from Max Klinger. In the years leading up to World War I, the artist lived and worked in Berlin. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
