Pirchan, Emil Composition in Mauve, Green, and Coral Red. Watercolors applied using the dip-paper technique (marbling) on vellum. 42 x 34 cm. Circa 1906/07. The painter, commercial artist, architect, set designer, and writer Emil Pirchan was rediscovered in 2019 at the Museum Folkwang in Essen through an exhibition that subsequently traveled to the Leopold Museum in Vienna. The artist’s dip-paper works were considered a special highlight of the exhibition. They are closely associated with “Vienna around 1900,” where the Brno-born artist became a master student of the famous architect Otto Wagner in 1903. Through the vibrant art scene in the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he was also closely connected to his second cousin Josef Hoffmann, who rose to fame in 1903 as one of the co-founders of the Wiener Werkstätte. Pirchan’s dip-dyed papers would be inconceivable without the Vienna Secession and its spirit of experimentation. Provenance: From the artist’s estate. In the possession of his descendants ever since. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
