Sattler, Josef Death as a Gravedigger Taking a Rest. Pen in black, washed in gray, on drawing paper. 23.7 x 15.6 cm. Inscribed and signed at the bottom right: "Z.[ur] E.[rinnerung] / JSattler". Josef Sattler, who studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, became known as an artist for his bookplates and illustrations—including those for the magazine *Pan*—and is considered one of the leading pioneers of Art Nouveau. The theme of death frequently appears in his work; for example, his well-known and haunting Art Nouveau images of the “Dance of Death” were first exhibited at the Berlin Salon in 1893 and published in 1894 as 13 color heliogravures. In 1912, they were reissued in an expanded second edition by Stargardt in Berlin as “A Modern Dance of Death in 16 Pictures.” In 1917, Sattler was appointed professor in Strasbourg. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
