Thoma, Hans Bust portrait of a boy in three-quarter profile. Pencil and black chalk on vellum. 29.1 x 21 cm. Signed and dated "Hans Thoma / 1865" in the lower right corner. After several abandoned apprenticeships, the young Thoma initially devoted himself to self-taught studies in painting and drawing before being admitted in 1859 to the Grand Ducal Art School in Karlsruhe, where he was a student of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and Ludwig Des Coudres, among others. This striking portrait of a boy suggests it was created within a close circle of family or friends. Thoma completed his studies in 1866. This was followed by several years of travel. Provenance: Bernhard Himmelheber Collection, Heidelberg (Lugt 4035). Exhibition: Karlsruhe 1961, Badischer Kunstverein, From Private Collections in Karlsruhe: Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings 1790–1940. - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
