Hildebrandt, Ferdinand Theodor Portrait of Wilhelm von Knobelsdorff in full dress uniform, with his aide-de-camp and horse behind him. Black and white chalk, graphite on dark brown paper. 41.5 x 29.5 cm. Signed lower left “Th. Hildebrand. 1827”; inscribed in pencil on the reverse in French: “Guillaume ... Knobelsdorf Officier ... Prusse.” The drawing, dated 1827, depicts the 25-year-old Wilhelm Anton Adrian Konstantin Baron von Knobelsdorff (1802, Bujukdere near Constantinople – 1880, Hanover). Wilhelm enlisted as a hussar in the 8th Hussar Regiment of the Prussian Army on May 1, 1821. From 1821 to 1824, he was seconded to the Division School and was promoted to second lieutenant in mid-April 1825. This promotion likely provided the inspiration for the drawing, which depicts the young lieutenant in a magnificent dress uniform and carrying a fine sword, while in the background an adjutant attempts to rein in the spirited horse. - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
