Türcke, Rudolf von Portrait of the Dresden painter Robert Schietzold. Black chalk and charcoal, partially smudged, with white highlights, on gray-brown paper. 39.6 x 26.3 cm. Signed lower left “R. v. Türcke fecit bei Abendbeleuchtung”; inscribed on the reverse “gez. R. v. Türck, Dresden” and “Portrait: Landscape painter Schietzold. (2nd Richter student).” Early 1860s. This striking portrait by Rudolf Türcke depicts his artist friend Robert Schietzold. Both Türcke and Schietzold met in Dresden, where records show they were in the same plaster cast class in 1860 and 1861. The youthful, almost childlike facial features of the subject suggest that the drawing must have been created during these early years at the academy. Although Türcke, like Schietzold, went on to specialize in landscape painting later in his career, this early work reveals him to be an exceptionally talented portraitist with a keen artistic sense for the essence of his subject. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
