Richter, Adrian Ludwig View of the Rabenauer Grund with a small rock cave. Pencil on vellum. 14.2 x 20.9 cm. Monogrammed, dated, and inscribed in the lower right corner: "L.R." and "Rabenauer Grund Aug. [18]67." Located south of Dresden, the Rabenauer Grund inspired numerous Romantic artists in the 19th century to create studies of nature on site. The charm of the wooded, unspoiled valley through which the Rote Weißeritz meanders had already attracted the young Ludwig Richter as early as 1822/23; he subsequently returned time and again to create drawings there, which later evolved into paintings. In this drawing, the painter was clearly captivated above all by the bizarre rocks, shaped by erosion, that form a small cave. Provenance: Eduard Cichorius Collection, Leipzig. Walter Bauer Collection, Fulda. Lit.: Exhibition catalog *German Drawing Art from Two Centuries, 1760–1960*. Watercolors, Drawings, and Prints from the W. B.
