Janssen, Victor Emil Study of the drapery of a seated young man. Pencil on light brown paper, mounted on thin, greenish-gray cardboard. 24.1 x 16.8 cm. Dated lower right “d: 9th May / 1830,” inscribed in pencil on the reverse by the previous owner: “Gift from / Dr. Winterstein 1968.” In August 1827, Janssen went to study at the Munich Academy under Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In the fall of 1833, he traveled with Friedrich Wasmann to Rome to study under Friedrich Overbeck, but returned to Munich by the end of the year. He suffered from bone tuberculosis. Before returning home to Hamburg, Janssen destroyed most of his works in 1843. Consequently, works by him are rarely found on the art market. Several closely related studies of drapery and garments from 1829–30 are now preserved in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Inv. Nos. 1940-31, 1952-93, 1941-4, 1940-33, 1941-5, and 1941-6). - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
