Olivier, Friedrich Page from a sketchbook featuring the silhouettes of a shepherd couple in front of the campanile of San Michele in Tivoli; on the right, a view through an archway toward Santo Stefano Rotondo in Rome. Pencil, with brown pen in the left section, on vellum. 18.6 x 24.9 cm. Titled and dated “Tivoli, May 30” in pencil at the bottom center. Circa 1820. A highly characteristic sketch by the artist, executed with economical means, which was likely created in 1819/20 during Olivier’s stay in Italy. A very similar view of S. Stefano Rotondo is in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf (see Marianne Bernhard (ed.): Deutsche Romantik Handzeichnungen, vol. 1, Munich, 1973, p. 1032). - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
