Ango, Jean-Robert The Conversion of Saul; The Blinding of Elymas. 2 red chalk drawings after Perino del Vaga. 29.7 x 29.2 cm; 26.8 x 26.7 cm. Each inscribed in the artist’s own hand, respectively in the lower right and lower center: “Polidoro da Caravaggio in Castel S. Angelo Roma.” Marked with a small coat of arms beneath a cardinal’s hat. Ango’s two studies were based on frescoes by Perino del Vaga in the Sala Paolina of Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. Pope Paul III, Alessandro Farnese, commissioned Perino del Vaga, along with other pupils of Raphael, to decorate his chambers on the fourth level of the ancient papal fortress of Castel Sant’Angelo. These suites of rooms, with their Mannerist paintings, are today among the most important works of art in the complex. In his inscriptions on the drawings, Ango mistakenly assumed that the creator of the frescoes was Polidoro di Caravaggio, which indicates the great esteem in which the artist was held as early as the 18th century. - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
