French 18th-century study of a skull. Red chalk over graphite. 30 x 40.8 cm. This skull study exemplifies the close relationship between artistic training, anatomical research, and moral-philosophical reflection in 18th-century France. In the academies, studies such as this one served as precise instruction in the anatomy of the human body, as well as in proportion, plasticity, and expression. At the same time, the motif refers to the enduring tradition of vanitas, which took on a new, secularized meaning during the Age of Enlightenment. In terms of drawing technique, the powerful, disciplined approach is reminiscent of the red chalk reproduction engravings by Gilles Demarteau (1722–1776). - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
