Novelli, Pietro Antonio Lion in a poised stance. Pen in black and brown over traces of black pencil, brush in gray, highlighted in white, on green-painted paper. 25.1 x 41.4 cm. Signed: multi-line inscription in an oval. Novelli was a prolific and versatile draftsman. Several of his studies depict lion sculptures, the Venetian heraldic animal and attribute of the city’s patron saint, St. Mark. This exceptionally expressive drawing shows a lion in a poised stance. With his dynamic brushwork and the rendering of the mane and muzzle, the artist makes the figure oscillate between a sculpture and a real animal. From a technical standpoint, the drawing is closely related to a drawing by Novelli in the Rijksmuseum, which depicts the two heads of a Gorgon and a satyr and is also executed in pen on green-painted paper with gray washes and white highlights (Inv. RP-T-1948-533). - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
