Italian c. 1580. Frieze featuring tritons, river gods, and nymphs. Pen-and-ink in brown, washed in light brown, mounted in an old frame, and affixed to the right margin on an old mount with a stamped gold-colored foliage frieze. 14.3 x 50.3 cm. An old number in brown pen in the upper left; inscribed in pencil on the reverse “Campe auction” and on the mount “Leipzig 1827 Campe Auction No. 884”; furthermore, inscribed in red chalk by an old hand “Rosso.” Provenance: H. W. Campe Collection, Leipzig (without his dry stamp; cf. Lugt 1391). Leipzig Municipal Court (Lugt 2731, with the pencil addition “Leipzig 1827”). C. G.
