Dyck, Anthony van - Workshop Workshop. Portrait of Hendrick van Balen. Black chalk. 32.3 x 21.4 cm. Watermark: five-pointed bell cap (cf. E. Hinterding, *Watermarks in Rembrandt’s Etchings: A–H, 1630s–1650s). The sheet is a contemporary copy based on van Dyck’s preparatory drawing for the copperplate engraving executed by Paulus Pontius from the series “Icones Principum Virorum” (Hollstein 554). Van Dyck’s original drawing is now in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles (Inv. 84.GB.92) and is dated to ca. 1627–1632. Both the skillful rendering of van Dyck’s draftsmanship and the watermark from the 1630s to the 1650s suggest that our sheet was created around that time. The artist likely had direct access to Van Dyck’s source material; in Van Dyck’s studio, as in Rubens’s, copying was common practice. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
