Waterloo, Anthonie Forest Interior. Black chalk and pen, brush in gray and brown, charcoal soaked in linseed oil in places. 41.4 x 31.9 cm. Circa 1670. Marked with a five-pointed bell cap (similar to Heawood 1963). This imposing, atmospheric drawing likely belongs to Waterloo’s mature oeuvre and is part of a category of large-format, finely executed landscape studies that he probably created for sale. The masterfully rendered forest landscape captivates with its atmospheric density and complex composition. The artist focuses entirely on the close-up depiction of gnarled tree trunks that crisscross to form an arabesque-like surface pattern, yet at the same time he succeeds in convincingly suggesting spatial depth and transparency. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
