Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus The Economic Trophy of Labes. Etching. 27.4 x 34 cm. On the lower margin, handwritten remarks by the artist on the life of Johannes von Labes: “… il demeure actuellement a Zerniko se vouant a la vie rurale.” (1770). Engelmann 67, Hirsch, Supplement to Engelmann, 67 (this copy inscribed). Watermark: crowned coat of arms; secondary mark: anchor. The capable Baron Johannes von Labes, grandfather of the poet Ludwig Achim von Arnim, acquired the Zernikow estate near Rheinsberg Castle through a favorable marriage. He commissioned Chodowiecki to create this allegorical depiction, which commemorates the reclamation of a barren stony field. An excellent, bold print with a narrow to fine margin, cut minimally just inside the plate edge at the top. Minimally dusty and with only isolated foxing spots; a dry crease on the reverse; the upper margin slightly creased; a small, backed tear in the center of the upper margin; otherwise in very good, original condition. Provenance: From the collection of Robert Hirsch (author of the addendum to Engelmann’s catalog raisonné). - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
