Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus—after after. The Four Temperaments before the painting "The Farewell of Jean Calas." Etching with graver by Christian von Mechel. 13.6 x 15.5 cm. (1796). Not listed in Hirsch (Addendum to Engelmann, Copies), Bauer N24. Due to the widespread circulation throughout Europe of the image “The Farewell of Jean Calas” (see Lot 6528), Johann Caspar Lavater also became aware of Chodowiecki and asked him to collaborate on the illustrations for his *Physiognomic Fragments*. In this context, the artist sent him a drawing in 1774 depicting the four temperaments (sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic) in the form of men contemplating the painting. Our print version was produced in 1776 by the Swiss copperplate engraver Christian von Mechel, who worked closely with Lavater. Two years later, Johann Heinrich Lips etched a title plate for the *Fragments* based on the same design. An excellent proof print preceding the text, with a very fine border around the plate edge. Slightly soiled, the corner tips creased, the lower left corner thinned, the title noted in pencil at the bottom; otherwise in very good condition. Rare. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
