Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus An elegant gathering of two ladies and two gentlemen by the window. Pen and ink in gray, washed in gray, with traces of white highlights, on handmade paper. 11.1 x 9.5 cm. Signed “D. Chodowiecki d.” in the lower right corner, and likely inscribed in the artist’s own hand in brown pen: “Meine Le...”. Circa 1760. The drawing, depicting ladies and gentlemen engrossed in conversation in front of a window, may have been created as a compositional sketch for a painting, comparable to works with similar motifs, such as “Family Entertainment” or “House Concert,” which were created in the late 1750s (see Willi Geismeier: Daniel Chodowiecki, Leipzig 1993, p. 34ff). - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
