Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus A gentleman in a walking coat, seated, his hands resting on a cane. Red chalk on handmade paper. 20 x 12.5 cm. Circa 1776. This study serves as a preparatory sketch for the figure of the uncle who poses riddles to his nephews and nieces in the title engraving “Kinderspiele und Gespräche” by Johann Gottlob Schummel, Part I, Leipzig 1778 (Engelmann 174). Additional drawings related to the same engraving, formerly in the Stechow Collection, were offered by C.G. Boerner (C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, Auction 128, 1919, Lots 116–119).
