Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus A girl is sitting at a table looking at a large book; a little boy is drawing. Red chalk rubbings on handmade paper. 21 x 18.3 cm. On the reverse, inscribed “Chodowiecki,” likely by another hand. Circa 1771. The drawing was likely created as a preparatory study for the 1771 etching *Cabinet d'un peintre* (Engelmann 75; see Lot 6503). The girl, who is probably his daughter Jeanette or Susanna, is sitting on the same chair where her younger brother Henri is seated in the etching. During the transfer process, the moistened paper was placed against a sheet of the newspaper “Berlinische Nachrichten,” whose faint imprint is now visible on the reverse. Provenance: Galerie Bassenge, Auction 59, 1997, Lot 5476. - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
