ACCORDING TO RENZO PIANO AND RICHARD ROGERS Preliminary drawing of the winning design for the Centre Pompidou, 1971. Print on paper of a graphic document related to the project submitted by Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, and Gianfranco Franchini to the international competition for the design of the Centre Beaubourg, 1971—the winning project that became the Centre Pompidou. 6.5 x 174 cm (for the slipcase) Provenance: -Collection of Marco Goldschmied, former assistant to Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the architects who won the international competition for the design of the Centre Beaubourg (now the Centre Pompidou) in 1971. -Passed down through the family. Additional information: Launched at the initiative of President Georges Pompidou, the international architectural competition for the construction of the future Centre Beaubourg sparked, in 1971, a contest of exceptional scope, drawing 681 entries from 49 countries. Chaired by Jean Prouvé, the jury selected in July 1971 the proposal by Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, and Gianfranco Franchini, developed with the assistance of engineers from Ove Arup & Partners. Resolutely innovative, their design envisioned a multidisciplinary cultural facility, open to the city and centered around vast, flexible interior spaces. Marco Goldschmied was one of the collaborators on the team led by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers for the 1971 international competition for the Beaubourg Center. As a young architect at the time, he took part in this collective endeavor and was notably tasked, in the final hours before the competition deadline, with shipping the project drawings from London to Paris. He subsequently continued his collaboration with Richard Rogers, eventually becoming one of his partners.
