LUDWIG MIES VAN DE ROHE (1886–1989) Set of six chairs, MR10 model designed in 1927, produced by Knoll International between 1979 and 1996. Chrome-plated tubular steel frame; seat and backrest in rattan cane. H. 80 - W. 67 - D. 47 cm (Very slight signs of oxidation, minor imperfections in the cane work) Provenance: Private collection, Paris. Bibliography: Charlotte and Peter Fiell, “1000 Chairs,” Taschen, Cologne, 1997; similar model reproduced on pp. 170–171. Additional Information: An icon of modernist furniture, the MR10 chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927 for the Weissenhof Exhibition in Stuttgart, which was dedicated to new forms of modern housing. Belonging to the family of cantilever chairs, or Freischwinger, characterized by a cantilevered structure without rear legs, it exemplifies the designer’s pursuit of structural lightness in the 1920s.The chairs we are presenting are distinguished by their seats and backs made of woven rattan, which contrast with the austerity of the metal frame. The rattan work is linked to Mies van der Rohe’s collaboration with architect and designer Lilly Reich, who contributed to the design of the interiors and furniture featured at the Weissenhof.
