A flexible 18k gold (750e) necklace, consisting of a braided chain with ends decorated with friezes connected by two strands of column chain, each adorned with three flower-shaped loops on either side. Attached lobster clasp. Probably an Italian piece from the 19th century, in the antique style. Weight: 64.40 g. Length: 39 cm. In the 19th century, certain jewelers known as “historicist” drew inspiration from ancient goldsmithing techniques in order to reconnect with the craftsmanship of the past. Among these techniques, the stamping of gold plates using dies allowed for the reproduction of decorative motifs, and jewelers sought to replicate the delicacy of ancient filigree and granulation. The crafting of chains also played an important role in this style of jewelry. Etruscan-style chains, such as our necklace or those known as “Herculanum” or “foxtail,” are distinguished by their suppleness and delicacy. Castellani and Giuliano used them as the bases for necklaces, adorned with pendants, enamel, or pearls. Despite the rise of mechanization in the 19th century, their designs seem to favor traditional artisanal methods. These practices thus reflect a commitment to preserving and reinterpreting techniques inherited from antiquity.
