Signs of age and wear. Partially damaged. FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF MARIA WELLER. * On October 5, 1984, René Weller stepped into the ring at the Frankfurt Festhalle against the Englishman George Feeney and, in a hard-fought battle, won the European lightweight title. Amid the cheers of the spectators, the winner’s wreath was placed around his neck. During the press conference, in the midst of the press scrum, the winner’s wreath was stolen. This loss hit Weller hard, as he had fought his way to victory with great discipline, fighting spirit, sweat, and blood. Decades later, Weller’s friend Ulrich Bittner—a well-known boxing promoter and longtime companion—contacted him. During a meeting, Bittner handed Weller the missing victory wreath. Bittner had come across the wreath at a boxing gym in Augsburg while traveling through Germany. Exactly how it had ended up there and who had stolen it back then could no longer be clearly determined. Bittner bought the victory wreath to return it to its rightful owner. He wanted to give his friend back this part of his history.
