SAINT LOUIS, Thistle model A crystal glassware set featuring delicate Venetian ribbing, bevels, and a gold frieze of foliage and thistles accenting the neck and base. It includes: - Two pitchers (different sizes) - A pair of ewers with their stoppers - A pair of decanters with their stoppers - One small single-flower vase - Three ramekins - Eighteen liqueur glasses - Sixteen champagne flutes - Eighteen white wine glasses - Seventeen red wine glasses - Nineteen water glasses The thistle, the emblem of the city of Nancy, inspired the design of this set, created in 1908 and first presented at the International Exhibition of Eastern France in Nancy. Until 1919, since the Saint Louis crystal factory was located in German territory, the presentation of a set bearing the symbol of French Lorraine led to the suspension of production. The set was then renamed “Thistle” (the English word for thistle) in 1913 or around 1919, in the context of the Entente Cordiale, to honor Scotland, for which the thistle is also the emblem.
