Paul Jean FLANDRIN (Lyon 1811 – Paris 1902) Portrait of Anatole Louis Le Mans Auvray, husband of Pauline Olympe de Villiers du Terrage On its original canvas 68 x 56 cm Signed and dated in the upper left: Paul FLANDRIN 1847. The younger brother of Auguste and Hippolyte Flandrin, Paul trained under Pierre-Henry Révoil at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon before continuing his studies in Paris under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whom he joined in 1829, and then under François-Édouard Bertin in 1831. In 1834, he reunited with his brother Hippolyte in Rome and remained in Italy until 1838. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1839. While Hippolyte Flandrin distinguished himself particularly in history painting and large-scale religious scenes, Paul Flandrin focused on landscape painting, though he also practiced portraiture and drawing. His stays in Italy inspired his landscapes and cityscapes, while his work reflects his classical training and the influence of Ingres. In particular, he painted views of the French countryside and landscapes of the Lyon region. The model in this painting is the son-in-law of Etienne de Villiers du Terrage. Provenance: Work commissioned directly from the artist and subsequently passed down through the family
