Jules Jacques VEYRASSAT (1828–1893) The Harvesters’ Rest Oil on canvas 45 x 65 cm Signed lower left: J. Veyrassat Wood and gilded stucco frame Bears a label on the back: “Collection of the late Mr. Henry Say / to be auctioned publicly in Paris / Galerie Georges Petit / 8 rue de Sèze, 8” Jules Jacques Veyrassat based his work on observations of rural life in the French countryside of his time. His subjects explore the themes of horse breeding and the use of horses in agricultural life. He never left his homeland, yet his fame spread throughout Europe. Associated with the Ecouen School and linked to the Barbizon School, he is mentioned in 1876 in Frédéric Henriet’s (1826–1918) book *Le Paysagiste aux champs*: Jules Veyrassat, who painted in Ecouen, […] his first scenes of harvests and haymaking, has been living in Samois for several years. It is there that he creates, with his characteristic flair, those tow horses, those quarrymen’s teams, those ferries laden with passengers, and those farmyards that have earned him his dual reputation as a painter and engraver.
