Léon Victor DUPRE (1816–1879) Threatening Sky Over the Pond Oil on panel 53 x 95.2 cm Signed and dated “Victor.Dupré 1851” in the lower right corner Provenance: French collection Roberts Gallery in Toronto, Canada The younger brother and student of Jules Dupré (1811–1889), he made his debut at the 1839 Salon and continued to exhibit until 1878. He painted landscapes of Normandy, Berry, Limousin, and Île-de-France. In 1852, the two brothers settled in the hamlet of Le Fay in the Creuse department, devoting themselves to plein air painting, which they would later continue together in Barbizon. The panel on display reflects the painter’s interest in depicting variations in weather and light, with the variety of brushstrokes capturing the reflections on the pond and the movement of the clouds.
