Théodore ROUSSEAU (1812–1867) Lively Forest Edge at Marlotte Oil on metal 32.3 x 39 cm Signed lower left: TH. ROUSSEAU, Marlotte 49 A certificate of authenticity dated August 20, 2026, issued by Mr. Michel Rodrigue, an expert on the Barbizon School and 19th-century painting and a member of the Union Française des Experts, will be provided to the purchaser. Rousseau chose to settle at the Auberge Ganne in Barbizon around 1847, and it was in 1848, following his meeting with Jean-François Millet, that he settled permanently in Barbizon. This village attracted a large number of artists, including Corot, Daubigny, Diaz de la Peña, and Olivier de Penne, followed by the Impressionists beginning in 1860: Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Bazille... Related works: There are works painted on metal: “Chaumières dans la plaine” (Thatched Cottages in the Plain), circa 1860, Koller auction, Zurich (Switzerland), Lot No. 3217, March 27, 2015, and “La Clairière,” Deburaux Aponem auction, April 25, 2010, Catalog No. 91. This technique is also found in Nos. 315, 316, 322, and 323 of Michel Schuman’s catalogue raisonné, with the works dated circa 1847–1850.
