French School, 1799 Manlius Torquatus Condemns His Son to Death Oil on canvas 115 x 147 cm Provenance: Collection of Mr. D. from the Vendée region, Logis de Chaligny. Our painting is most likely one of the works entered in the 1799 Prix de Rome. That year, there were two winners: Alphonse Gaudar de La Verdine and Alexandre-Romain Honnet. Their paintings are housed at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Nicolas de Courteille, of whom we know of several very similar paintings, may be a likely candidate as the artist of this painting.
