Maurice TEPHAINE (1909–2009). The Transshipment Bridge in Nantes. Oil on canvas, signed lower right. Height: 60 cm - Width: 100 cm The transshipment bridge in Nantes was built in 1903 and dismantled in 1958. It allowed goods and workers from the shipyards to cross at the site of the current Anne de Bretagne Bridge. This new type of bridge was the brainchild of Spanish engineer and architect Alberto de Palacio and Ferdinand Arnodin, a French engineer and industrialist who specialized in cable-stayed bridges. Together, they built the first transporter bridge at the entrance to Bilbao, followed by the one in Rouen, before being commissioned to work on the project in Nantes.
