S.F.O.M., France | Cigarette Lighter Spy Camera Estimate: €12,000–14,000 Year: c. 1940 Condition: B/A English: Possibly a unique French concealed camera, ingeniously disguised as a pocket cigarette lighter. Attributed to S.F.O.M. (Société Française d’Optique et de Mécanique), Rueil, France, a manufacturer known for its highly sophisticated miniature cameras developed for French military intelligence around the beginning of World War II. The remarkably compact, black-finished metal body incorporates an elaborate miniature photographic mechanism, demonstrating exceptional precision engineering and craftsmanship. Particularly noteworthy is the removable aperture slide, offering four precisely calibrated settings of f/2.5, f/3.5, f/5, and f/7. An internal brass component bears the manufacturer’s engraving “S.F.O.M. – RUEIL.” The camera retains its perfectly fitting, brown ribbed velvet carrying pouch with an original French Éclair metal zipper, which was discovered along with the camera. Both items show some signs of age and use. While S.F.O.M. miniature spy cameras from the wartime period are documented, no other example of this remarkable lighter-shaped design has yet been identified in the available literature or auction records. An extraordinary surviving example of clandestine photographic engineering, possibly representing an experimental or individually manufactured camera intended for covert photography. The camera is in very fine and working condition; the cigarette lighter also works perfectly. Provenance: Recently discovered in France, together with its matching period-style carrying pouch. German: Possibly a unique French spy camera, ingeniously disguised as an ordinary pocket lighter and manufactured by S.F.O.M. An internal brass component bears the manufacturer’s engraving “S.F.O.M. – RUEIL.” The perfectly matching brown, ribbed velvet pouch with an original French Éclair metal zipper—which was discovered together with the camera—has been preserved. Both items show signs of use.
