381 - Corpus Christi. Wood carved in the round, plastered, and polychromed. The fine, even features of his face, delicately framed by curls of hair and beard, contrast with his closed eyes and slightly parted mouth, modestly conveying human drama. The short perizonium, carefully carved even on the reverse side, is held in place by a ribbon tied with great care on the side, allowing the fabric to fall in a supple and graceful drape. Italy, Florence, ca. 1480–1500. H. 82 cm. Damage, losses, and restorations. Ref. Our Christ belongs to the corpus identified in and around the workshops of Giovanni, known as Teutonico, who was active in Florence as early as 1457 and was still present in Norcia in 1494. A certificate of authenticity by Massimo Griffo, dated December 20, 1976, will be provided to the purchaser.
