[LITERATURE] Henri BEYLE, known as STENDHAL - The Charterhouse of Parma Published by Ambroise Dupont, Paris, 1839—A magnificent copy of the first edition, described as “very rare and extremely sought-after” (Clouzot), of this absolute masterpiece by the author and one of the most important works of 19th-century literature. Printed on heavy vellum, this work has become even rarer than *The Red and the Black*; this fine copy is in particularly fresh condition, with only a few rare foxing spots. Later pastiche bindings from the first half of the 20th century in half-calf with romantic decoration and title and volume number labels in morocco leather; very fine pastiche work, with perfectly executed endpapers and half-ends in marbled paper. Beautiful margins; its overall fresh condition makes this a first-rate copy. In-8, 402 pp.; 445 pp.
