[MEDICINE] [RENAISSANCE] IBN SINA [AVICENNA] & Jacob MANTINO (translation) - Avicenna’s Fourth Part of the First Book on the Universal Method of Healing: Published for the First Time. Translated into Latin by Jacob Mantino, a Jewish physician Lucantonio Giunti, Venice, 1530 [Colophon] - First edition of the Latin translation, by Jacob Mantino, of the fourth part of the first book of the *Canon of Medicine* by the Persian philosopher and physician Ibn Sina (original title: *al-Qanun fi at-Tibb*), divided into 31 chapters. 19th-century later binding in half-sheepskin with corner pieces; jaws slightly rubbed; minor defects on the spine; title label slightly rubbed; interior relatively well-preserved despite small traces of old marginal water stains; margins satisfactory. A fine copy of this very rare Renaissance print. The translator, Mantino, dedicates this work to the Doge of the Republic of Venice, Andrea Gritti (1455–1538); it is worth noting that Jacob Mantino (1490–1549) was a Jewish physician, rabbi, and philosopher. Born in Spain, he was forced, along with his family and the Jewish community of Tortosa, to flee after refusing Catholic baptism. Mantino grew up in Italy and studied philosophy and medicine at the universities of Bologna and Padua. He spent most of his adult life as a physician to the pope and other prominent figures—cardinals, bishops, and ambassadors—in Bologna, Verona, Venice, and Rome. As a translator, he focused on scientific works, which he translated from Hebrew and Arabic into Latin, notably medical and philosophical treatises by major medieval authors such as Maimonides, Ibn Rushd (Averroes), and Ibn Sina (Avicenna). In-8, 60ff. Provenance: Anatole France, with his bookplate bearing the amusing motto “Ut melius, quidquid erit, pati!” (How much better it is to accept/endure whatever may come!) taken from Horace’s Odes
