NUR JAHAN — A DISTINGUISHED MUGHAL MINIATURE PORTRAIT, INDIA CIRCA 1780 A refined and visually compelling Mughal miniature depicting Empress Nur Jahan, consort of Emperor Jahangir, seated in regal repose within an elaborately conceived palace and garden setting. The empress is portrayed in sumptuous courtly costume, her figure richly embellished with layers of jewelry and a finely worked jeweled headdress. An attendant stands respectfully behind her, holding a ceremonial fly-whisk, emphasizing the sitter's imperial status. The architectural backdrop, flowering borders, stylized cypress trees and intricately patterned textiles contribute to the highly decorative character of the composition. Executed with delicate brushwork and a sophisticated palette, the painting demonstrates the enduring Mughal fascination with portraiture, court ceremony and botanical ornament. The highly stylized profile, sumptuous costume and restrained yet elegant use of gold are characteristic of the Indian miniature tradition. The identification of the sitter as Nur Jahan is particularly significant. Celebrated as one of the most powerful and culturally influential women of the Mughal Empire, Nur Jahan became an enduring icon of imperial India and a favored subject of later Mughal and Rajput ateliers. A remarkable historical and decorative work, evocative of the splendour of the Mughal court and the legendary legacy of Nur Jahan. Attributed to a Mughal school, circa 1780. 48 by 37 cm. 24 by 16 cm.
