DECORATIONS. ENGLAND. Set of decorations belonging to Merchant Marine Officer George Norman ELLIOTT, including a silver plated LLOYD’S medal engraved on the edge with “FOURTH OFFICER G.N. ELLIOTT, S.S. ‘VILLE de STRASBOURG,’ JANUARY 1943" with ribbon in its case; also included is his silver Member of the British Empire (MBE) cross with ribbon and its case, the 1939–1945 Commemorative Medal, and several photos of G.N. ELLIOTT. Set from a family collection. BE Awarded only 541 times by Lloyd’s, this medal was presented to George Norman ELLIOTT for his decisive role during the attack on the troop transport ship “Ville de Strasbourg,” which had been requisitioned by the Royal Navy. On January 7, 1943, the ship came under heavy attack off the coast of Bougie (Bejaia) by the German submarine U-371. A torpedo struck the bow head-on. Despite the heavy damage and the order for a partial evacuation, members of the crew showed exceptional courage in stabilizing the ship and preventing it from sinking. It was precisely for their exemplary conduct during this crisis in January 1943 that two sailors from the ship received the renowned Lloyd’s Medal of Bravery (as well as official decorations from the British Crown): G. N. Elliott (4th Officer) – Awarded the Lloyd’s War Medal and made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). George Cyril Granger (Able Seaman).
