André DORÉ (1970) The Sultan’s Pleasures TABLE LAMP Patinated and polychrome bronze, glass panels H. 68 cm - W. 49 cm approx. American electrical wiring Minor signs of wear Note: A French artist, ceramicist, and sculptor renowned for his dreamlike and decorative world, André Doré unfolds a baroque imagination in which the working of materials serves poetic and fantastical forms. With his sculptural lamp “Les Plaisirs du Sultan,” Doré follows in the vein of a reimagined and theatrical Orientalism, transforming a utilitarian light fixture into a true sculpted scene. The piece is distinguished by a keen sense of volume, exuberant modeling, and contrasting textures, where clay, glazes, and metallic patinas evoke the legendary sumptuousness of Eastern palaces. Through narrative motifs imbued with sensuality, scrollwork, and figures evocative of the harem or the tales of *One Thousand and One Nights*, light serves not only as illumination but as a staging element that reveals the work’s reliefs and cast shadows. By blurring the boundaries between the applied arts, narrative sculpture, and art furniture, André Doré transforms this creation into a unique collector’s piece, demonstrating his ability to infuse everyday objects with a magical and narrative dimension.
