Pavel Petrovich TRUBETSKOY (1866–1938), after Woman Tying Her Hair Patinated bronze cast, signed on the base H. 45.5 cm Note: Pavel Petrovich Trubetskoy (1866–1938), a Russian prince born in Italy and trained in Milan, was one of the leading figures of Impressionist sculpture alongside Auguste Rodin and Medardo Rosso. Fiercely opposed to academicism, he developed an inimitable style characterized by feverish, rapid, and energetic modeling, in which the clay or wax retains the vivid imprint of his fingers. This vibrant surface captures the light to convey the moment and movement rather than fixed contours. A celebrated portraitist of Belle Époque high society, he immortalized figures such as Leo Tolstoy—whose vegetarian philosophy he shared—and George Bernard Shaw with great psychological finesse. Although his imposing equestrian monument to Tsar Alexander III in Saint Petersburg sparked controversy due to its massive realism, his work remains admired above all for its spontaneous elegance, its intimate grace, and its touching depictions of animals.
