Adam STYKA (1890–1959) Couple Kissing Oil on canvas, signed lower right H. 56 cm - W. 40 cm Note: Adam Styka (1890–1959) was a Polish-born, naturalized French Orientalist painter, known worldwide by the nickname “the painter of the sun.” The son of the famous historical painter Jan Styka, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before enlisting in the French army during World War I. His career took a decisive turn thanks to his numerous trips to North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Egypt), which shaped the identity of his work. He is distinguished by an extremely vibrant color palette, strong contrasts, and an unmatched ability to capture the blinding light of the desert. His paintings immortalize Saharan landscapes, Arab horsemen, market scenes, and local daily life with warmth and authenticity. Having settled in the United States toward the end of his life, he also turned to religious painting, but he remains celebrated today as one of the major figures of 20th-century Orientalism.
