Jean-Charles AVISSEAU (1796–1861) Very important LIDDED VASE decorated with rustic figurines, in the style of Bernard Palissy’s work The body is adorned with coiled snakes, lizards, frogs, foliage, and lifelike insects; the lid is adorned with a handle. Polychrome glazed earthenware, signed “Avisseau” in Tours H. 30 cm - W. 26.5 cm Note: A leading figure in 19th-century French ceramics and founder of the “École de Tours,” Charles-Jean Avisseau (1796–1861) is famous for having rediscovered, after years of relentless self-taught research, the secrets of Bernard Palissy’s glazes and firing techniques. While his fame rests primarily on his celebrated rustic basins and platters adorned with naturalistic reptiles in high relief, his production of lidded vases illustrates the masterful transposition of this bestiary into large-scale decoration and architectural volume. On these imposing pieces, topped with lids often crowned by a lizard, a salamander, or a knotted branch, Avisseau unfolds a true drama of nature: the bellies and plant motifs come to life as a microcosm teeming with frogs, grass snakes, crayfish, and aquatic foliage captured in the moment. The artist elevates earthenware through his famous marbled, translucent, and iridescent glazes, where gradations of ochre, deep browns, and aquatic greens lend the creatures a striking trompe-l’œil relief. Far more than a mere pastiche of the Mannerist Renaissance, Avisseau’s lidded vases embody the Romantic taste for an organic and theatrical naturalism, establishing this master from Tours as one of the most inventive innovators in the ceramic arts of his time.
