Antique Americana Folk Art Carved Wood Alligator Smoking Pipe 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown. Materials: Carved hardwood (likely briar or walnut) Marking(s): Incised with an indistinct, partially obscured handwritten artist signature on the bottom of bowl. Cataloguer's Note: This early 20th-century antique tobacco pipe is a detailed example of American folk art or Southern souvenir carving. The execution features a long, rustic natural wood shank intricately carved in high relief with a prowling alligator or crocodile scaling the top ridge towards the bowl. Positioned at the front base of the pipe bowl is a small, contrasting dark-stained figural carving depicting a person's head, which relates to historic Black Americana novelty themes common in late 19th and early 20th-century decorative tobacciana.
