467 - (3 pcs) Signed Japanese Carved Boxwood Rat Netsukes Late 19th-early 20th century Artist/Designer/Manufacturer: Unknown Materials: Boxwood (tsuge) Marking(s): Each signed Cataloguer's Note: This coordinated set of three 20th-century studio-carved boxwood toggles is executed in the traditional format of Japanese netsuke miniatures. Each piece utilizes the rat (nezumi), which serves as a classical zodiac symbol representing good fortune, cleverness, and agricultural abundance. The left carving depicts a detailed rat perched atop a large, smooth chestnut. The center carving shows a rat scale-crawling a traditional woven straw sweeping broom, showing exceptionally crisp texture work. The right toggle captures two animated rats dynamically coiled together, gnawing at a segment of rope or fish. All three display inlaid dark horn accents for the eyes, deep undercutting, and the characteristically smooth, rich honey-brown patina of finely aged boxwood art pieces. H .75" - 2" x L 1"- 2" Good condition. Unless otherwise stated, all information provided is the opinion of our specialists.
